There’s an important bit of context missing from this testimonial.

This student already loved literature. Shakespeare was a bit different. Like many students, she’d encountered enough barriers around the plays that reading them could feel more like something to overcome than something to enjoy.

And she’s in Year 13.

Which means that when she goes to see Othello at Conwy Castle this summer, her exams will already be over. There will be no essay to write afterwards. No assessment objective to satisfy.

Not a single additional mark available for going.

She’s going because she wants to.

I’m delighted when a student gets better at writing about literature. Of course I am. But sometimes there’s another kind of result: when the text stops being something you study because you have to, and becomes something you choose for yourself.

I’ll take that one too.
