A strange thing happens when students realise they don’t need to guess what the teacher wants to hear.

They start taking their own ideas more seriously.

This student’s piece argued something that many people might disagree with. My job wasn’t to tell him what to think. It was to help him make his case more clearly, more logically, and more persuasively.

Most of the interesting work begins there.
