From The Archives: 25.05.19

Some questions – some texts – refuse to stay in the past.

I originally wrote this post in 2019 as part of my Shakespeare read-through.

Looking back, I’m struck by how quickly the world has changed, and how I’ve changed too. Whereas I almost casually throw in the line from ‘A Streetcar Named Desire‘ about deliberate cruelty, I would mean it in 2026, when I think the world is crueller in a way I couldn’t have foreseen.

I was reminded that part of literature’s value lies not in giving us answers, but in helping us think more carefully about difficult things.
